Tehching Hsieh and Linda Montano, “The Year of The Rope”
I know I normally don’t make posts like this, however I was extremely inspired today by a lecture I went to at The Art Institute today. When I first learned about Tehching Hsieh it was through an article that Alex and Alyson Grey had written about his performance piece with Linda Montano where the two of them were tied together by an 8 foot long piece of rope for one whole year, without touching.
Today he spoke at SAIC and told us about his other performance work including staying in a cage for an entire year with no human contact and nothing to do, living outside in NYC for an entire year without going inside at all, and punching a time clock every hour on the hour for an entire year.
Self control and will power is something that I lack, and learning of these pieces and hearing him speak was such an inspiration. I could never imagine myself doing any of this. It is truly amazing.
